Fighting Acne - A 10-Step Guide to Washing Your Face

By  James K Zane

What could be simpler than washing your face? Well, just the face that we can break it down into ten distinct steps may tell you there's more to it than you may think at first. The splash-soap-rinse method may be enough for some people, but for clear healthy skin a little more effort is required.

First, though, here are some basic guidelines for keeping your skin healthy and clear:

1) Avoid irritation: Make sure your are being gentle with your skin, both during the wash and between washing. Skin that is red and irritated is more prone to acne and other blemishes. Never rub or scratch at your skin if you can avoid it.

2) Choose the right products for you: Different skin types require different products. Clear skin just needs some gentle maintenance products. Non-inflamed acne (blackheads) might need an aggressive scrub, while inflamed acne needs something softer and possibly medicated.

3) Consult a professional: Especially if you have serious or chronic condition, check with a professional about some of the alternatives for your skincare regime. It may take trying a few different methods to get the results you're looking for.

And now that's out of the way. Here are the ten steps to washing your face.

Step #1 - Wash Your Hands

It's important to use a high-quality anti-bacterial soap. You may not want to use such a strong soap every time you wash your hands, but before touching your face it's a very good idea.

Step #2 - Clear Your Face

This means to remove any makeup you might be wearing (preferably with a product specifically designed for such) and keeping your hair out of your face. If you have long hair, tie or pin it back.

Step #3 - Wet Your Face and Neck

Use warm water or steam to wet your face and neck. Never use cold water. The warmth helps your pores open and relax making it easier to clear the dirt, oil and other junk from them. Cold water makes them tighten up, trapping inside everythign you want to clean.

Step #4 - Get Your Cleanser

Put a small amount of your cleanser in your wet hands. Again, it's important to use a cleanser appropriate for you and your skin. Put a dab in your hand about the size of a medium coin (i.e. a nickel or even a quarter).

Step #5 - Lather Up Your Cleanser

Get your cleanser worked into a lather in your hands before you apply it to your face. How much lather you get will depend on the product you're using, so be aware of when your product is ready to use.

Step #6 - Apply the Cleanser

Once you've got it all frothy, massage the cleanser onto your face. Be very gentle to prevent irritation. You don't need too long, about 10 to 30 seconds only, but be thorough. Make sure you cover any problem areas, as well as the neck and behind the ears.

Step #7 - Rinse Your Face

Use clear water that's either warm or tepid. Never use cold water as it could cause some shock to the skin and result in other kinds of blemishes.

Step #8 - Pat Your Face Dry

Use a clean, soft towel to pat your face dry. Linen is often a good choice as it is also absorbent enough. Never rub at your face as this will cause irritation and undo all your hard work thus far.

Step #9 - Use Toner or Astringent as Needed

Not everyone will need to do this step. For anyone with large pores, however, it's highly recommended to use a toner or astringent to tighten them up. It also has the extra benefit of clearing away any remaining cleanser.

Step #10 - Moisturize

Use a non-oily moisturizer to keep your skin smooth and healthy throughout the day. It's also important to use an eye cream - a moisturizer specifically for the area around your eyes. The skin here is very different from the rest of your face, so it needs a little something extra.

That's a basic run-down of acne prevention and skin care at it's simplest. For more information please check out my blog. There is also a free newsletter there full of great info. Come visit at:
